Wright Contemporary: FIGURATION x THREE

Wright Contemporary

July 20-September 1

OPENING RECEPTION:
Saturday July 20, 4 – 6 pm

Wright Contemporary
627 Paseo del Pueblo Sur
Taos, New Mexico

Interest in figurative art comes and goes down through the decades, but in the case of these three artists, all in their seventies, it never really went away. Bob Richardson favors a straightforward realism, with hints of the Old Masters, and occasional humorous notes, as in his naked self-portrait at work on an oversized canvas or his camera-crazed tourists. Ian Ratowsky, who lives in Mallorca, Spain, operates in a dreamy zone that incorporates magic realism and what he calls a “nonformulary approach to female portraiture.” In her drawings in the Wright Office, Greta Young shows body parts on a collision course with other anatomical detritus, highlighted by broadly brushed areas of color. These bits and pieces of struggling humanity are comic, but they also seem somewhat desperate and doomed.

Alfred Morang

Santa Fe Master Alfred Morang- Matthews Gallery Blog

Alfred Morang’s life ended with a fire. It was a frigid January evening in 1958, and Morang was up late at Claude’s Tavern. The saloon was on Canyon Road’s 600 block. Its owner Claude was a burly woman known for ejecting unruly patrons by slinging them over her shoulder. She presided over a wild scene: legend has it someone once rode a horse straight through the bar.

The City Different: The Roots Go Deep

santa fe photography

As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the United States, Santa Fe has long enchanted visitors with its rich history and unquestionable beauty. Situated at the base of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Santa Fe’s tranquil yet rugged environs engender both inspiration and isolation, providing ideal conditions for a multicolored artistic paradise to flourish.

The city’s instantly recognizable character, an alchemical fusion of ineffable mystique and laid-back spunk, stems from a cultural continuum that links Indigenous peoples and European settlers to the multivalent influence of Santa Fe’s newest transplants. Though it remains modest in size, the city has supplemented its ever-ascending cultural cachet over the past several decades with robust dining and shopping scenes, making it a global destination for all. 12th SITE Santa Fe International – Cecilia Alemani

Cecilia Alemani will curate the 12th SITE SANTA FE International, (formerly known as the SITE SANTA FE Biennial) opening summer 2025 and running through early 2026. Since its creation in 1995, the International has served as a model for international contemporary art exhibitions and inspired countless exhibitions of its kind globally. As the anchor of SITE SANTA FE’s programming, it has served as the foundation for robust year-round programming at the institution, which is in keeping with the artist-centric approach of the SITE SANTA FE International, allowing artists to realize work they wouldn’t be able to create elsewhere.

The 2025 edition will mark the 30th anniversary of the museum as well as the biennial itself. When it was founded in 1995, the SITE Biennial was one of the rare recurring art events, alongside Whitney Biennial and Carnegie International. Over the following years, it hosted several prestigious curators like Francesco Bonami, Robert Storr, Candice Hopkins, and Ruba Katrib.

The appointment of Alemani continues the special historical ties of the International to the Venice Biennale. Alemani will be the fourth curator to organize both the International and Venice Biennale exhibitions. Continue reading “12th SITE Santa Fe International – Cecilia Alemani”
