Breath Taking. Curated by Kate Ware, in this exhibition, contemporary artists find inventive ways to express this fundamental and elusive act by measuring it, scanning it, enclosing it, evoking it, and reminding us of our own vulnerability.

Kim Richardson states, “The ocean invokes breath naturally, by the coming and going of the tide, with water comes life, primordial life. In my artistic practice I look to the natural environment as a mirror and feedback to what is happening internally and externally, consciously and unconsciously. More than ever we need to be present and aware of what is happening in the natural world around us and to open up to the joys it shares and the protection it needs. If we are disconnected to nature we miss a part of the puzzle of being human and whole”.

Oceans are sometimes known as the lungs of the planet, since the plankton that live near the surface produce oxygen and consume carbon. Interested in the qualities where place, land, sea and sky meet, Richardson evokes nature’s harmony and deep geologic time.

Kim studied fine art and photography at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, and Parsons School of Design in Paris. She worked in collaborative projects that exhibited at Centre Pompidou in Paris and Alleged Gallery in New York City. Kim is a photographic artist presently living in Santa Fe, NM with her husband, painter and educator, Willy Bo Richardson and their lovely, dynamic daughter Audrey Richardson. In addition to her photography she also has a background in fine art printing for artists who she prints with master printer, Steve Zeifman, with Rush Creek Editions

Other News at new Mexico Museum: Construction Begins on Vladem Contemporary

The New Mexico Museum of Art and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation (MNMF) are excited to announce that construction began the week of February 2nd on the New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary on the site of the Halpin Building in the Railyard District in Santa Fe. After the Museums 100 year history, it moves the museum one step closer to the vision of a dedicated space for contemporary art to complement the historic 1917 building on the Santa Fe Plaza.

Bradbury Stamm Construction of Albuquerque was selected on Jan. 25 as the general contractor for Vladem Contemporary. Founded in 1923, Bradbury Stamm Construction, Inc. is the state’s largest women-owned business, the oldest construction firm in the state, and one of the largest 400 general contractors in the nation.

The $14.1 million construction project is expected to be completed in 14 months. An additional 5-6 months will be required to install the inaugural exhibits. Stay tuned for more information on the planned festivities, exhibits and educational programs.

Once open to the public, the New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary will present ambitious contemporary exhibitions, highlight working artists, and provide space for expanded educational programs.
